The area around Walla Walla is one of the country's premier wine producing locations. The region has six wine-growing areas--Westside, Eastside, Southside, Airport, Downtown, and Oregon side--and over 120 wineries. In this article, rather than compile an extensive list of Walla Walla wineries, we simply list a few of our favorites. If you need more information, feel free to give us a call. L'Ecole No 41

If you were to visit only one winery in the Walla Walla area, L'Ecole No 41 would be it. Founded in 1983, L'Ecole No 41 is one of the area's oldest wineries. The owner's focus is on creating unique, terroir-driven wines produced from vineyards in Walla Walla Valley and Columbia Valley.

L'Ecole No 41 produces a variety of wines, and is best known for its wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Semillon. The winery has won numerous awards over many years, and the owners are leaders in practicing sustainable farming.

The building housing L'Ecole No 41 is a converted schoolhouse, and the tasting room was originally the cafeteria and gym.

Woodward Canyon Winery

Established in 1981, Woodward Canyon is the second oldest winery in Walla Walla Valley. This family-owned and family-operated winery follows sustainable winemaking practices and is Certified Salmon Safe.

Woodward Canyon Winery is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, and Chardonnays. The tasting room is a restored 1870s farmhouse, with indoor and outdoor seating available. Another structure, the Reserve House, is also available for wine tastings.

Gramercy Cellars

Gramercy Cellars was founded in 2005 by Greg and Pam Harrington. The owners mix Walla Walla's excellent growing conditions with minimalist wine-making techniques (use a little new oak as possible, for example) to produce some of the area's most highly thought of wines.

Gramercy Cellars is best known for the Rhone and Bordeaux based blends produced there. The wines are typically described as "earthy," and the winery has received numerous prestigious awards.

Seven Hills Winery

Located in the downtown Walla Walla district, Seven Hills Winery was established in 1988, making it one of the first wineries in the area. The winery produces a variety of wines and is especially known for its Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots. The owners of Seven Hills Winery practice sustainable agriculture and the winery is Certified Salmon Safe.

Seven Hills Winery is housed in the historic Enterprise Planning and Furniture Company building. Note that the tasting room is on the building's west side, which means you have a good chance of seeing a fantastic sunset if you visit in the early evening.

Sleight of Hand Cellars was founded in 2007 and is considered one of Washington's premier up-and-coming wineries. The owners' emphasis on mixing wine-making and fun (along with limited supplies and high demand) has created something of a cult following for their excellent wines. Sleight of Hand Cellars offers a variety of wines, including Rieslings and Chardonnays.

Visiting the funky, magic-themed tasting rooms at Sleight of Hand Cellars is definitely an experience. The owners feel that music inspires their wine production, and they enjoy adding selections from a variety of musical genres to customers' wine tastings.
